The Lone Ranger 1933 reviewThe Lone Ranger radio show

After an ambush that left his brother and four other Texas Rangers dead, John Reid is saved by a Native American named Tonto. After he regained full strength, John plans to find Butch Cavendish and avenge the dead Rangers. In order to keep his identity a secret, he wears a mask and Tonto digs a sixth grave at the ambush spot, so Cavendish and his gang would believe that John also died. While in pursuit of the Butch, the two challenge every villain they stumble upon in the Wild West.

The longest running Western show, with almost 3000 episodes aired in 21 years, The Lone Ranger was originally conceived as a kids-oriented show set in the Wild West, but once it gained popularity, it became obvious that adults are constituted at least half of the audience. And The Lone Ranger was a massive success when it comes to audience - around 1939, over 20 million Americans were listening to the episodes and the show began to be aired abroad.

It was successful enough to not only spawned a spin-off, The Green Hornet, a series of novels, comic books, a newspaper strip, but also, after World War 2, The Lone Ranger became a successful TV show which aired for eight seasons (between 1949 and 1957) and film serials. The show itself was a mixture of Western, adventure and a formula that worked later in so many other productions (even like The A Team) - the main characters fight injustice wherever they go.
