The Archers 1951 reviewThe Archers radio show

The beginning of The Archers was a bit surprising - the pilot series of five episodes were developed in 1950 as a form of educating British farmers in the post-war development in the agricultural production. The episodes were supposed to bring the knowledge how to improve the productivity of the farms and were broadcast in the Midlands only. Once BBC noticed how popular the series can be, they moved it to the national broadcast and, with time, changed the nature of the show.

The Archers is set in the fictional village of Ambridge in the fictional county of Borsetshire, in England. The central characters of the show are the Archers family, who run their farm, called Brookfield. It is a typical farm that mixes the crop cultivation to cattle and sheep breeding. Through the years the Brookfield was passed from Dan Archer to his son Phil, later to Phil’s children, and the nature of the place have changed. Apart from the several farms, the village also have a local shop, a post office, and, of course, a pub called The Bull.

The nature of the show has shifted in the years to inclusion of more real-life events that influence the lives in Ambridge, the cast had to evolve (for obvious reasons), the problems faced by the characters have changed, but even in the reality of Internet and podcasts, this soap opera managed not only to remain popular, but still be relevant.
