The newly discovered journal of Doctor Watson, seems to paint a completely different picture of the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Or, as Watson usually describes him, "a genius, master of disguise and toffee-nosed ponce". The cases they get are not much different from what a renown amateur detective would stumble upon - carnivorous plants, murky waters of entertainment in the Victorian era, plots to harm the queen herself, or a secret society of shoemakers - you know, the usual.
The Newly Discovered Casebook of Sherlock Holmes was a parody of the adventures of the famous detective, not the first one, not the last one, but certainly a unique one. The risqué jokes, sometimes painful puns or elements of breaking the fourth wall, made the experience quite different from everything else. To be fair, not always a good experience, some jokes or musical numbers were a bit too old-fashioned, but most of the material was quite entertaining.
Another aspect of the show, apart from the scripts, was the cast, which included few people that had an impressive list of shows in their CVs, Roy Hudd and his The News Huddlines, Chris Emmett and The Burkiss Way, June Whitfield (from Carry On movies to Terry and June), Geoffrey Whitehead (it is hard to even choose what for he is most famous for) and Jeffrey Holland (Hi-De-Hi, You Rang M’Lord?).
It was not a show for everyone’s taste, but if you are into surreal or risqué jokes, you won’t be disappointed.
