"Hello, Duffy’s Tavern, where the elite meet to eat. Archie the manager speakin’. Duffy ain’t here—oh, hello, Duffy" - Archie, the manager opens each episode with dialogue over the phone with his never seen, nor heard employer. In reality Duffy’s Tavern is a seedy bar and grille on New York’s Third Avenue, where you can meet some... unusual characters. If not for the manager himself, who is constantly on the lookout for opportunity to make some money, Clifton Finnegan who falls for every single scam he stumbles upon, owner’s man-crazed daughter called Miss Duffy, then for almost every single customer that wanders into the bar.
Due to the formula of a bar set in New York City, the show enjoyed a long list of well-known guest stars that took part in single episodes, among them Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Rex Harrison, Susan Hayward, Bob Hope, Lena Horne, Boris Karloff, Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, Peter Lorre or Vincent Price. Anyone could just walk into a bar for a drink, which leaves doors wide open for introduction of new characters or people, who will just pop up for a single appearance.
The show was an interesting mixture of comedy, music and atmosphere, which made it popular among listeners. Duffy’s Tavern ran for 10 years on different networks and later was turned into a feature film and TV series, both of which could hardly compete with the radio show when it comes to quality.
