Radio Theater 1927 reviewRadio Theater radio show

Norwegian Radioteatret (Radio Theater) was one of the first radio shows in the country - established in 1926, at the beginning it was presenting mostly the readings of the classic books or plays, but with time the production moved to plays prepared purely for radio. The content of the show was a mixture of classic and modern drama, but also crime stories and some comedy.

Of course, at the beginning, all the shows were broadcast live, with the biggest challenges in the production being the limited studio space available and limited equipment available for the wider cast needed for bigger productions. Until 1934 also the sound effects were some challenge and often the technicians were forced to improvise them. After 1934, special effects equipment was introduced into the process, which increased the production quality. During World War 2, when Norway was under German occupation, the Radioteatret was not being broadcast, the shows returned in 1945.

The production of Radio Theater as a radio show stopped in 2021, even though the show had up to 100,000 listeners for the drama shows and even more for the crime shows. Nevertheless, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), the state-controlled radio and television broadcasting company, decided to keep the production, but publish it in a form of a podcast.
